Your foremost defense for catching skin cancer early is to be fully aware of skin cancer the warning signs and receive routine skin cancer screenings. At Atlantic Dermatology, we assess your condition, diagnose and identify the best treatment options for:
- Precancerous Skin Lesions
- Actinic Keratosis
- Basal Cell Carcinoma
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma
- Malignant Melanoma
Treating Precancerous Skin Lesions
The most recent advancement offered to our patients for treating Actinic Keratosis and precancerous skin lesions is an in-office procedure called Photodynamic Therapy.
This therapy involves a topical medication called levulinic acid being applied to precancerous skin for a predetermined amount of time. A blue light is then directed to the affected area with the purpose of destroying the precancerous skin cells.
Photodynamic Therapy is tolerated by the majority of our patients very well. Medication application is relatively painless, though exposure to the BLU-U Light may have a slight stinging sensation.
Another possible side effect is that the skin might appear “sunburned” for up to 4-7 days post treatment.
Treating Basal Cell Carcinoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer and also the slowest growing form of skin cancer. This type of skin cancer largely appears on the places of the body most often exposed to the sun, such as: hands, arms, face and more.
Unusual skin irregularities to look for include:
- A raised area that may or may not have blood vessels
- An open sore that heals, returns and bleeds
- Pearly lumps ranging from brown to flesh colored
- A shiny or taut area having a scar like appearance
- A reddish patch that will not heal and may itch
Early stage basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads and has a low mortality rate. This form of skin cancer, but left untreated, it is possible that basal cell cancer may invade surrounding tissue. The most effective treatment for basal cell carcinoma is surgical removal.

Treating Squamous Cell Carcinoma
While Squamous cell carcinoma is almost always curable if detected early and surgically removed, it is still considered to be a dangerous type of skin cancer. It has the capacity to grow deeply and spread further.
A favorable squamous cell carcinoma prognosis is depends on being watchful for changes on your skin.
Squamous cell skin cancer can resemble cancerous warts and skin cancer bumps having a central depression and appear anywhere on the body. We urge Conway residents to attentive to the following warning signs:
- A rough and scaly growth that resembles a wart
- An open sore that bleeds and lasts for weeks
- A lump that bleeds that may grow quickly and has a central depression
- A crusty and scaly patch that is red and bleeds
Squamous cell skin cancer is not a skin cancer to be taken lightly. It can be deadly
Treating Malignant Melanoma
Malignant Melanoma holds the highest mortality rate of all the skin cancers, accounting for one death every hour. It is the rarest of all the skin cancers and most often will manifest as cancerous moles.
Because of the seriousness of this cancer, it is absolutely vital to be continually watchful of new and existing moles. Watch for these signs:
- Bleeding and/or itchy moles
- Moles that may change in size, color, or shape
- A new spot that may bleed or itch and is dark
Malignant melanoma, while more common in men overall, is the number one type of cancer in women ages 25 to 29 years and the second most common form of cancer in young women and women between the ages 15-29 years of age. We cannot stress enough how absolutely critical early detection is for treating malignant melanoma and improving prognosis.
We urge our Conway residents to take extreme caution if you notice any of the warning signs above and do not wait to come in for a skin cancer screening and mole check.
Skin Cancer Prevention
Wearing sunscreen is your first and best step toward skin cancer prevention. Be sure to apply sunscreen every two hours covering sensitive areas.
Avoid long-term, direct sun exposure between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM. Even though these are great tips, a single blistering sunburn is enough to put you at a higher risk for skin cancer.
If any changes in warts or moles or any new ones appearing cause you concern, or if you notice any kind of abnormality to your skin, contact Atlantic Dermatology today to schedule an appointment so that we can discuss your concerns and get you on a path to your best skin health.
