Affecting any area of the body, skin cancer develops from the skin cells. It often stems from ultraviolet light that originates from tanning beds or the sun. Even those of us living in Conway can’t entirely avoid spending time outdoors, every day, week, and month we are exposed to sunlight.

The wonderful news is most skin cancer lesions respond very well to skin cancer treatment especially caught in the early stages. Your greatest defense to prevent skin cancer is to set routine appointments with a dermatologist for skin cancer screenings.

Call Atlantic Dermatology today to arrange a skin cancer screening at 843-399-9965.

Types of Skin Cancer

Mutations that develop in the DNA of skin cells are the cause of skin cancer. When our skin becomes damaged in this way, the mutated skin cells can multiply rapidly in a strange pattern. These anomalies in our skin cell production lead to malignant tumors.

Malignant tumors can appear in various forms. Some forms are skin cancer are common, some are rare, yet in a different manner.
Three types of skin cancer are:

  • Malignant Melanoma
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma

We treat all types of skin cancer at Atlantic Dermatology. If you are a resident living in or near the Conway area and have a skin spot you’re concerned about, need treatment for skin cancer or simply want a skin cancer check to take preventative measures, schedule an appointment with us today.

Malignant Melanoma

Malignant Melanoma is the rarest form of skin cancer. Being the most dangerous and deadly form, it most often manifests as mutation in an existing mole or appear as a sudden new mole.
The greatest advantage for the best prognosis is early skin cancer diagnosis and early treatment.

It is imperative to contact our office right away if you have found a new mole or observed any changes to a current mole. If you live in or around Conway, contact us at 843-399-99654 or through our online form.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous Cell Carcinoma generally appears on the parts of the body most frequently exposed to the sun, although it can appear anywhere on the body. It is the second most common type of skin cancer.

This type of skin cancer is able to grow deeper into the skin tissue and extend to other parts of the body. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is almost always curable when detected early and surgically removed.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma often develops on the parts of the skin most frequently exposed to the sun.

These areas tend to be arms, hands, neck, ears and scalp. This is the most common type of skin cancer and typically, basal cell carcinoma is the slowest growing form of skin cancer.

Be Aware of the Warning Signs for Skin Cancer

Skin cancer bumps and unusual marks or spots can vary greatly. They don’t always appear the same.

They can be dark or light, scar-like or scaly, raised or flat and more. Indicators to be mindful of include moles that change in appearance or seem to have suddenly appear, skin spots reoccurring or aren’t healing and bumps or lumps growing rapidly.

Certain warning signs should never be ignored, even though skin cancer can develop in various and peculiar ways. Warning signs to watch for are:

  • A mole altering in color, size or shape
  • A  lump appearing to have a central depression and may grow quickly
  • A sore seeming to recur that bleeds
  •  A scaly patch and/or reddish that does not seem to heal
